This little ceramic dog figurine is found in the Hall of Mexico and Central America at AMNH. It is at least 500 years old. There is a lot of dog imagery in this hall.
During our drawing class in this hall we were told a memorable tidbit. The ancient civilizations of Central America had interesting ways of classifying objects into groups. For example, an armpit and a toad are in the same group of objects. Can you figure out why?… Answer: They are both dry above and wet underneath! I was trying to think of what else could be in that category. Maybe canoes?
